The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves in a dramatic first-game encounter on Wednesday in Minneapolis, kicking off the NBA's Western Conference playoffs in style.

After trailing 83-82 going into the fourth quarter, Luka Doncic scored 15 of his 33 points in the last frame to help the Mavericks win 108-105. Kyrie Irving scored 24 points in the first half to keep Dallas in the game, which was tight the entire time. The final three minutes of play were critical defensive stops that the Mavericks needed to win.

With 24 points, Jaden McDaniels led the Timberwolves, while Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards shot a combined 12-for-36 from the floor. Minnesota tried their best but ultimately failed, giving Dallas the opportunity to seize home-court advantage.

1. The main lesson learned from Game 1

Tim MacMahon: It was the first time the Mavericks have won a Game 1 under head coach Jason Kidd. Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic alternated leading the team in scoring, with Irving scoring 24 of his 30 points in the first half and Doncic finishing with 15 in the fourth.

Dave McMenamin: The Timberwolves suffered a great deal as a result of their inability to perform at pivotal times, such as Towns's offensive goaltending and Conley's late-game turnover. Another contributing reason was Minnesota's subpar free-throw shooting (11-for-18) as opposed to Dallas' (16-for-17).

Key Learnings from Mavericks vs. Timberwolves in Game 1

Brian Windhorst: Doncic and Irving's big-game experience overshadowed Towns' and Edwards' efforts, and it proved to be crucial in Dallas' victory in Game 1.

 2. One Big Adjustment for Game 2

MacMahon: The Mavericks should give more minutes to rookie Dereck Lively II, who has been highly effective. Although changing the starting lineup might be drastic, increasing Lively's playing time could benefit Dallas.

McMenamin: The Timberwolves need to increase their pace, as they slowed down significantly in the second half. Focusing on fast-break points could help them in Game 2.

Windhorst: Dallas will continue to pack the paint, forcing Minnesota to rely on outside shooting. This strategy worked in Game 1, especially in the second half, and will likely be employed again.

3. The Series' Role Player X-Factor

MacMahon: In the event that Towns stumbles, P.J. Washington of the Mavericks, who made a clutch corner 3 in Game 1, may be a key figure.

McMenamin: Jaden McDaniels, who was solid throughout the series but waned in the fourth quarter of Game 1, will have to sustain his play.

Windhorst: Mike Conley will be crucial to the Timberwolves going forward since his presence and organizational abilities were lacking during the crunch.
