In an interview, Shania Twain discusses how she was able to forgive her former spouse, Robert "Mutt" Lange.
After being married in 1993, Twain and Lange lived together until 2008, when Lange had
an affair with Twain's close friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Since 2011, Twain has been married to Frédéric Thiébaud, the ex-husband of her old acquaintance.
In a recent interview, Twain discussed how she overcame her hatred for Lange in the "Great Company with Jamie Laing" podcast, which aired on May 29.
"We're talking about letting go and how difficult it can be to let go," she explained. "Letting go is on the family tree of forgiveness. However, forgiving is not truly... at least not for me. It's not always about forgetting.
comprehension of the other person is important, and that comprehension may indicate that they are, in fact, mistaken. Perhaps you will always think that whatever they did was bad," she began to say.
Twain then went on to describe how she "totally" forgave her late stepfather, Jerry Twain, whom she had accused of assaulting her when she was a youngster.
In 1987, Twain lost her mother, Sharon, and her stepfather in an automobile accident.
"I understand that he wasn't well and that you don't act certain ways; you know, unless there's something wrong with you, there's something wrong with your stability," she said.
Rather than being angry with him, Twain stated that she "feels bad that he had those problems."
"Its very hard to hate or not be able to forgive somebody that you believe," she said. "As a fellow human being, he is deserving of compassion and understanding. I believe we all do, don't you?"
Returning to the subject of Lange's adultery, the singer questioned, "Do I detest my ex-husband for erring? No. He made a mistake. Not my error."
"[I'm] so sad for him that he made such a great mistake that he has to live with," she said. "That's not my weight."
Eja, Twain and Lange's son, is twenty-two years old.
